Shear clips extend the integral truss underneath the tray support ring. Figure 6 shows a schematic of a welded shear clip. Shear clips by themselves greatly increase the strength of a tray. Shear clips have minimal material cost (how much does a 3" by 6" piece of steel ¼" thick cost?) and installation cost. This is a first step on improving reliability. Shear clips may be either welded or simply bolted in place.
