Revamps are different from new construction. Revamps push plant
capabilities toward their limits in order to take advantage of
existing equipment while minimizing new investment. Part of pushing
the plant is successful use of new technology. Often, achieving
revamp objectives requires a plant to move outside its experience
base. Some plants seem to consistently succeed while others have
many failures. Successful implementation of new technology will
separate the survivors from the failures as the new century unfolds.
Successful innovation requires creating a supportive environment
for change and innovation.
