A case history of damage to a refinery atmospheric column caused by water feed to the tower is examined. Control system data as well as field data are shown. Due to unusual circumstances, the timing of the water incident could be determined accurately. Observed damage found when the tower was opened is shown. Specific comments are made by review of the observed damage. Many photographs of damage are shown along with a comparison of the impact on the different types of trays involved. Conclusions on mechanical reliability are reviewed.
